Though
sleepy and calm today,
Galena was
once the
busiest shipping port North

on the
Mississippi River.
In it's Early
years, Galena was the largest city in Illinois.
Built in 1846 by
Darius Hunkins
Mr. Hunkins

to build the
Great Illinois Central Railroad
In 1847
Hunkins was awarded the contract to build the Spring Street and
Meeker Street bridges. The first Galena bridges to survive the
spring floods.
Anna Hunkins
is still legendary for her sense of style and fashion.
It was said
she requested her husband to build Her the bridge' so that she could
shop downtown at will without having to share the ferry with the
rough and tumble miners.
You too can
recapture the Graciousness of life on the River 150 years ago.
